If you think about it, your house/apartment works pretty hard for you. It gives you a place to hang your hat and/or rest your head. It hangs out with your laundry when you’re busy at work. It also does nice little things like holding up your roof.
That’s why at Fluff, we’re big proponents of showing your house little, thoughtful gestures from time to time. And really, prepping for something like the big graduation party you’ve been planning for six months is the perfect time to employ what we call the “micro-makeover.” A micro-makeover is really a very targeted and selective version of a regular makeover. It’s strategic. It’s tactical. It works. More importantly, when you’re in that stressful pre-party twilight zone, it’s the perfect pick-me-up for your nest and for you! The good news is that we’ve come up with our top 4 tips for making making “micro” work for you.
Before you keep reading, if you’re saying to yourself, “That all sounds great, but I can’t do this on my own,” then you might want to familiarize with our Fast Fluffs and Consultations. Otherwise…
Glitz up your foyer. No really, you would be surprised at how much a new entryway can do for the psyche. And the damage to your pocketbook is relatively minimal: console/chest/table + 2 high impact lamps (or 1 huge lamp) + statement mirror + books + fresh flowers, PRESTO!

Change out your hardware. Replace your Plain Jane doorknobs with something a little more Wowowee! Or exchange the regular knobs on a sleepy piece of furniture with something playful like flat quartz ones in bright colors.
Turquoise Knob (Anthropologie), Hammered Pull (Atlas Homewares) Switch out your toss pillows. One of our very own – Lorrie – actually has a mild addiction to doing this. Because pillows are usually colorful and large, they pack a visual punch, which makes them perfect for a micro-makeover. Just be sure to hang on to your old pillows. You never know when you might want to switch them back or mix and match them differently down the road. Not sure how to mix and match colors and patterns? HGTV’s Emily Henderson offers a great tutorial:
Style a bookshelf. No, don’t panic – It’s easier than you might think (although it does take some practice). Here are some good rules of thumb to follow: 1) Use lots of books. They are great for filling space and adding color. Just make sure you vary their orientation – some upright and some flat. 2) Use the “2 together, 1 apart” equation. It’s visually appealing to the eye to group two larger items together and have one smaller item just a little bit apart from them. Make sure to layer the items though (instead of lining them up), and try to find items of varying heights, fullness, and texture. 3) Don’t worry about things looking perfect. If your books all over a bit…that’s ok. And not everything has to look like it was bought at one store. Bookshelves are perfect for displaying personal mementos and family photos that mean something to you. Don’t be afraid to use them. Here’s an example of a client’s bookshelf that we gave a micro-makeover:
