Our fabulous intern, Jenny, completed a really neat project this month that we just had to share with you: She created her own upholstered headboard!
The great thing is that, because she lives in a rental, she made sure the headboard didn’t need to be mounted to the wall. (For that reason, this would make a perfect project for your kiddos who are off to college this fall and want to spice up their dorm rooms!)
If you want to create something similar and need some visuals, you can visit the site where she got her original instructions, but here’s an overview in her own words of how she made it all come together:
“I switched up the instructions a bit, because I have a rental house that I am using this in and I did not
want to mount the headboard to the wall as it could leave marks that I would have to pay for when I
move out. I actually made a frame first with 1×4 pieces of wood attached on either side of the main
headboard part using a biscuit cutter and gluing the biscuits into the pieces of wood and then gluing
those pieces together to form a frame. The actual main piece of board I made was for a queen size bed
and measured 30” wide by 60” long, and is made of ½” NAC Plywood. Then I cut 18-10” pieces of ¼”
underlayment and glued quilt batting to the front side. I cut out 13” squares of fabric to have an extra
3” around the sides of the board. I covered the 10” board with the fabric and just glued it with craft glue
onto the 10” boards. The craft glue was strong enough so I didn’t have to staple the fabric to the boards.
Then I attached the 10” pieces to the main board with caulking glue. I let it dry overnight and able to use
it the next day. The last step was attaching it to the bed frame by drilling two holes on either sides of the
bottom of the frame and using bolts to attach it to the frame. Overall it took 3 nights to make it. Cost
was about $150, so more economical than buying one from somewhere, and a lot more custom and
unique.” – Jenny
